Our speaker on Wednesday 16 November 2022 was the Worshipful, the Mayor of the London Borough of Harrow, Councillor Janet Mote. The meeting was a hybrid meeting conducted under some difficulty as our venue’s ‘Ultimate WiFi Serivce’ was being subjected to maintenance by Virgin Media during the meeting!
Councillor Janet described how she had come into Local Government and then into local politics. Her late husband would have served as mayor, following his father who had been the first elected mayor of the London Borough of Harrow, but with his death towards the end of July 2021, that was not going to happen. Instead, Janet had been elected at the end of May 2022 after serving as a councillor for more than 20 years.
In addition to the usual mayoral tasks associated with schools, businesses, and religious institutions, Councillor Janet described how the schedule had been affected by the Platinum Jubilee. Then the programme had changed again with the death of HM Queen Elizabeth II and the succession of HM King Charles III.
There was also a memorable report on the birthdays of two citizens of Harrow, one celebrated a 107th Birthday and the other celebrated a 110th Birthday!
This was a most engaging talk filled with many small but intricate details, and led to many questions from the floor. At the end of the meeting, arrangements for the Christmas Meal were discussed and decisions made on our plans.
