At our meeting on Wednesday 16th July 2014, we had two more Youth Exchange visitors at the Club. Shown in the photo above are Wendy and Nazli. Nazli is here from Turkey for a couple of weeks, and then Wendy will be off to Turkey for a couple of weeks.
Our speaker for the meeting had to cancel at short notice owing to ill health in her family. Sue Adlington had recently returned from a two month visit to the Philippines doing humanitarian aid work in North Cebu. The work centred on giving relief, and rebuilding houses and buncas (fishing boats destroyed by “Yolanda” – known as Typhoon Haiyan to western world). This work is essential for the people evacuated to the mountains if they are to be able to return to their previous livelihoods.
Sue wrote, “The people have little if anything and yet they have such strength, resilience, hope, faith and belief that they amaze me.
“Often, with the conditions I see, I have to take a moment to breath and believe what I am seeing; it is often beyond comprehension as we sit back in our western world. ‘Seeing is believing’ is a saying which I firmly believe in. I have been both honoured and privileged to meet these people.”
We hope to hear from Sue in person when our diaries can be re-synchronised.
