Our speaker on Wednesday 25th May was Heather Saunders, who the club had helped sponsor for a year of Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) in Nigeria. Heather is back now and wanted to tell her story. Before going to Nigeria, Heather had worked as a fundraiser with the British Red Cross, and she had the opportunity in Nigeria to put her skills to good use. 1 in 6 Africans are Nigerian, but the country of 150m people has the same capacity for generating electricity as Bradford in the UK. Even so, Nigeria has been voted the ‘happiest’ place to live in the world by its population. Heather worked for Hope for the Village Child, and helped with HR, systems and record keeping, monitoring and evaluation and with developing the organisation. Many of the villages are not on the government’s ‘radar’ and have to rely on charitable organisations for many things. Heather will be returning to help further this summer.
